What is Functional Medicine?

The functional medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.

Fixing the Cause

By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find one condition has many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, functional medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual.

Functional Neurology

Functional neurology is based on the principles of neuroplasticity, the concept that involves adaptive structural and functional changes to the brain. In functional neurology we are less worried about what name to call what is going on with the client but rather focused on finding the physiology involved and seeing if we can make a change to that physiology in real time.  It is the ability of the nervous system to change its activity in response to intrinsic or extrinsic stimuli by reorganizing its structure, functions, or connections.  It provides evidence-based treatments aimed at improving neurological disorders such as concussions, dysautonomia, dizziness, mood disorders and cognitive disorders.  It is currently the main method of assessment for people recovering from traumatic brain injury, stroke, Alzheimer’s/dementia, Parkinson’s and other disorders of the central nervous system.

Advanced Functional Medicine

The idea of functional medicine has been around since the late 1990s.  Medicine realized that the western medical approach to helping people is broken.  Functional medicine evolved out of the need of a system to help attain optimal health, not just disease management.   Unfortunately, much of today’s functional medicine has been modeled after western medicine with individual’s being subjected to thousands of dollars of laboratory tests many of which may provide unreliable results.  For example, just because a food sensitivity test doesn’t indicate that you are having an allergy response to a food doesn’t mean that you may not have a cross-reactivity autoimmune reaction to that food which is impacting your immune system.

The new advanced Functional Medicine looks at many available modalities, physical tests, neurologic tests, electrodermal screening tests, etc. to yield the most favorable outcomes.

Advanced Functional Medicine strives to achieve the quickest results with the least amount of testing.
